Understanding & Retaining Your Young Technicians

We have discussed how to hire the right person in the past, but let’s take it a step further. How do you keep that talent as your Technical expert?

Ratchet + Wrench explained how to do this in a recent article.  They not only touch on how to keep technicians but more specifically how to keep good YOUNG talented techs.

Finding the right talent is hard.  It has a lot to do with their knowledge, confidence, maturity, and are they the right fit for the job.

This is an interesting article because the person doing the hiring and trying to retain the talent also taught their hire at the Carquest Technical Institute.

There is an interesting fact from this article, or should we say the Professor, that “really only two out of every 20 students in a graduating class will be poised for success in the industry.”  He proceeds to give reasons for this.

Reading this article, the more complex cars are to repair, fewer and fewer people are growing up fixing their own.  So they go into tech schools not know a flat head from a phillps so more has to be taught. According to Jim Cokonis much of what is being learned in tech schools is outdated.

So how do they keep young tech talent?  Try building a team atmosphere. Think of the movie Glengarry Glen Ross, in a way.  A (always) B (Be) C (closing) but instead of closing replace the C with T (Training).  Training happens every day for everyone, not just the younger hires, make it part  of the day to day operations, according to Ross Colket of Colket Automotive Technical Services, who is the focus of this article.  He also says that Gen Z’s reputation is that they don’t want to work, or have a strong desire to.  He has a great take about the younger generation:
